World Food Day is celebrated on Friday October 16. It is a day of international action against hunger. The official goal of the day is to “heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.” Food is a basic human right, yet unbelievably one person in every nine lives in chronic hunger.

The costs of hunger and malnutrition fall heavily on our most vulnerable.

  • 60% of the hungry in the world are women.
  • Almost 5 million children under the age of 5 die of malnutrition-related causes every year.
  • 4 in 10 children in poor countries are malnourished causing damage to their bodies and brain
