Apple time

Fresh Aussie apples are bursting with flavour. What makes an apple so good for our health?

Apples are antioxidant powerhouses containing 10 times more antioxidants than goji berry juice, and packed with fibre, B vitamins, vitamin C and potassium. They are also low GI and like many other fruits contain no fat, salt or cholesterol.

7 reasons to crunch into a delicious apple:

1. Apples lower cholesterol. With a huge 4 grams of fibre per serve apples can lower cholesterol. Pectin, a fibre in apples,  binds to cholesterol, blocking its absorption from the gut.

2. Apples are a weight watcher’s buddy. With only 300 kJ per serve, apples are great for weight loss. What’s more their fibre keeps you feeling full longer and satisfies appetite making you inclined to eat less. Because apples can positively influence your metabolic hormones they may also help with belly fat loss.

3. Apples prevent and manage diabetes. The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid which lowers our body’s need for insulin and keeps diabetes in check. Polyphenols also found in apples reduce the enzymes responsible for breaking carbohydrates down into sugars which causes sugar spikes.

4. Apples power the brain by boosting memory and reducing Alzheimer’s. Apples are rich in quercetin (another anti oxidant) which protects brain cells from damage. Apples also increase acetylcholine which is needed to transmit communication between brain cells or neurons.

5. Apples protect from cancer. Apple skin is rich in a range of flavinoids including quercetin, procyanidins, naringin and triterpinoids which function like scavengers mopping up the free radicals which cause cellular damage and cancer. Apple eaters have a lower risk of liver, lung, bowel, prostate and breast cancers.

6. Breathe easier with apples. Apples are linked with improved lung function and less asthma.

7. If all that isn’t enough apples can improve your love life by increasing the flow of blood to the reproductive organs and improve sexual arousal.
