Eating family meals at home has social, economic and health benefits. Family meals provide an opportunity for your family to re-group, share their day, problem solve and grow together. Because home cooked meals are cheaper, money can be saved by cooking and eating at home. Family cooked meals also provide a valuable teaching opportunity for your children to develop important food skills. Home meals are healthier because it is far easier to include a good amount of vegetables and fruit while reducing higher kilojoule foods such as deep fried meats and chips. This means your meal will more likely meet your nutritional needs.
If you are looking for some inspiration, look no further, as I share my favourite family meals with you. My first recipe idea is a Mediterranean fish recipe from Italy called Pesce all' Italiana. This is a good way to introduce fish to reluctant eaters!
First, I have made a vegetable sauce based on onion fried in olive oil, 440g tin tomatoes, with Italian herbs (oregano, basil) and about 4 small zucchini. I have then panfried some fish fillets, such as sweet lip or hoki in olive oil. The fish were then buried in my zucchini sauce. I sprinkled a little parmesan cheese on top & grilled them in the oven for a few minutes before serving with boiled baby new potatoes!
