Feeling Great in February with Australia's Healthy Weight Week

It's time to "fuel great" in February.  So join me and other nutrition experts in celebrating Australia's Healthy Weight Week (AHWW) from 15-20 February 2016.

The themes of Australia's Healthy Weight Week this year are:

  • Promoting the nutritional benefits of eating more home cooked meals. Dietitian research shows that people who frequently cook meals at home are healthier and are more likely to have a healthy body weight. It is much easier to include more vegetables and salad ingredients when meals are cooked at home. This means the energy or calories in the meal are less dense and more diluted. Eating with the family has other benefits too such as reconnecting with each other and saving money. So the goal of AHWW in 2016 is to inspire Australians to enjoy more home cooked meals. • Take the time to check your portion sizes. Research shows that when we are presented with larger portions we consume more food. Ironically we do not seem to respond with increased satiety and we eat the larger portion.  So while it is tempting to upsize serve sizes by choosing the larger serve or package, be wary as this means eating more energy or calories than we need. It is easy to see how this problem of overeating energy is compounded when we are faced with larger portions of energy dense foods such as popular takeaway foods and packaged snack items. If you would like a personalised eating plan, arrange an appointment with our dietitian, Susan, for individual advice on the right portions for you.

  • During AHWW – post your home-cooked meal on Instagram and tag it with #AHWW and #cookingchallange to win a cooking lesson in Adelaide with celebrity cook, Callum Hann and APD, Themis Chryssidis from Sprout cooking school. This prize includes return flights and one night’s accommodation for you and a friend. Don’t forget to follow @dietitians_association_aus on Instagram.
